Sign Command Generator

Beta

Write up to four styled lines on each side, pick the wood and how the sign hangs, and see it flip in the preview. Copy a /setblock or /give command for your Java version.

Describe it — AI writes the command

Type what you want in plain words. The AI fills the form below, so you can see it and change anything. It follows the edition and version you picked.

How it works

Sign data changed several times, so a command copied from an old tutorial usually places an empty sign. The generator writes the format your version reads.

Java 1.20 and later: two sides

Each side has its own four lines, dye colour and glow. From 1.21.5 the lines are written as SNBT:

setblock ~ ~ ~ minecraft:oak_sign[rotation=8]{front_text:{messages:["",{text:"Welcome",color:"gold"},"",""],has_glowing_text:1b},is_waxed:1b}

From 1.20 to 1.21.4 each line is a JSON string in single quotes:

setblock ~ ~ ~ minecraft:oak_sign[rotation=8]{front_text:{messages:['""','{"text":"Welcome","color":"gold"}','""','""'],has_glowing_text:1b}}

Java 1.13 to 1.19.4

setblock ~ ~ ~ minecraft:oak_sign[rotation=8]{Text2:'{"text":"Welcome","color":"gold"}',GlowingText:1b}

Dyeing the whole sign (Color) arrived in 1.14 along with a sign for every wood, glowing text in 1.17, and back text, wax and hanging signs in 1.20. In 1.13 there is only the oak sign.

A sign item with the text already on it

Pick “Give a sign item” to get a sign you can place anywhere. It uses block_entity_data from 1.20.5 and BlockEntityTag before. The game only keeps the text when an operator places it.

Bedrock

Bedrock commands cannot write on signs: there is no NBT. The generator places or gives the right sign block, and you write the text by hand.

FAQ

How do I make glowing text on a sign with a command?

Tick Glowing text. Java 1.20 and later write has_glowing_text:1b inside front_text or back_text; 1.17 to 1.19.4 use GlowingText:1b. Before 1.17 there is no glowing text.

Can I write on the back of a sign with a command?

Yes on Java 1.20 and later, with back_text. Earlier versions only have one side.

How do I stop players editing a sign?

Tick Waxed (is_waxed:1b, Java 1.20+). In game you can also use honeycomb on the sign.

Why does my sign command place an empty sign?

The text is in the wrong format for your version: Text1 to Text4 before 1.20, front_text messages from 1.20, and SNBT text instead of JSON strings from 1.21.5. Pick your version and copy again.

Can I put text on a sign with commands in Bedrock?

No. Bedrock's /setblock and /give have no NBT, so signs are always placed blank. Write on them by hand after placing them.
